L Trailer

Auf Poster und Teaser folgt erfahrungsgemäß der Trailer, so auch im Falle von Babis Makridis “L”, der in Sundance Premiere feierte. Sieht genau so abgefahren aus, wie sich die Plot-Beschreibung liest.

A man lives in his car. He’s 40 and separated from his wife and kids, who live in a different car. They meet in parking lots. A professional driver, the man delivers honey to a narcoleptic man and often dreams of his friend, who was killed when a hunter mistook him for a bear. Frequently late delivering honey, the man is fired, and his driving skills are questioned. Thrust into existential uncertainty, he abandons “car life” and joins a rogue motorbike gang.

I Am Not A Hipster

Am ~~kommenden~~ vergangenen Wochenende ~~geht~~ ging das Sundance Film Festival 2012 zu Ende, welches in den vergangenen Tagen das vorherrschende Thema in den einschlägigen Filmblogs war. Schenkt man den Reviews glauben, so gab es in diesem Jahr dort nach meinem Empfinden überdurchschnittlich viele beachtenswerte Filme zu sehen, zu denen wohl auch “I Am Not A Hipster” gehört. Alex Billington von First Showing bezeichnet ihn als “fantastic Indie Music Indie” und vergibt satte 9/10 Punkte. Macht euch selbst ein Bild davon anhand des sehr gelungenen ersten Trailers.

Watch 2012 Sundance Short Films ⇒

It’s always hard to formulate sexy story-lines for the shorts categories, but let me give a try: ONLINE. We’ve been telling people for a while that Sundance’s official entry policy has changed to not discriminate against films that exhibit online before the festival, and this year the message should ring loud and clear—you can have both! Reap the benefits of an online launch and still keep your hopes up for getting into America’s most important fest. To illustrate the point, here are a handful of films you can watch right now.

Das Sundance Film Festival hat seine Richtlinien gelockert und lässt nun auch Kurzfilme zum Wettbewerb zu, die zuvor bereits online uraufgeführt wurden. Fünf der Teilnehmer fürs nächste Jahr gibt es bei Short of the Week zu sehen, dazu noch ein halbes Dutzend ältere Arbeiten von Regisseuren, die mit ihrem aktuellen Filmchen dabei sein werden.

Wrong Teaser

Wer “Rubber” gesehen hat, eine irrwitziger Satire deren Protagonist ein serienmordender Autoreifen war, dem dürfte bekannt sein, dass die Filme von Quentin Dupieux das genaue Gegenteil zu Mainstream-Kino sind. Seine nächste Regiearbeit trägt den ebenfalls schlichten Titel “Wrong” und wird im Januar 2012 auf dem Sundance Film Festival Premiere feiern. Anlässlich des heute veröffentlichen Wettbewerbprogramms hat das französische Multitalent einen ersten Teaser hochgeladen, welcher erneut auf ein herrlich schräges Filmerlebnis hoffen lässt.

Offizieller Hesher Trailer

Hesher

Im Mai wird der langerwartete “Hesher” endlich offiziell erscheinen, und ich habe ehrlich gesagt ein wenig Angst, dass er all dem Hype eventuell nicht gerecht werden könnte. Der neue offizielle Trailer sieht allerdings nach wie vor gut aus, weshalb sich meine Bedenken letztlich in Grenzen halten.

The film centers on a teenager (Devin Brochu) and his father (Rainn Wilson) who are forced to move in with the boy’s grandmother (Piper Laurie) after the sudden and tragic death of their mother/wife. A young man with a troubled past named Hesher (Gordon-Levitt) assumes the role as both mentor and tormentor, while a young grocery clerk (Natalie Portman) steps in to protect the teenager, and becomes the object of his fantasies.

Hesher Trailer

“Hesher” von Spencer Susser, dessen Kurzfilm “I Love Sarah Jane” vom gesamten Internet hoch und runter gefeiert wurde, hatte bereits vor über einem Jahr auf dem Sundance 2010 seine Premiere. Nun wird er nach einigen Schwierigkeiten endlich im April in den USA in die Kinos kommen, weshalb wohl auch ein erster Trailer aufgetaucht ist.

Win Win Trailer

Win Win

“Win Win”, der neue Film von Tom McCarthy (dessen letzter Film “The Visitor” bereits großartig war und Richard Jenkins völlig zu Recht eine Oscar-Nominierung als bester Hauptdarsteller einbrachte), hat in Sundance offenbar einige hervorragende Kritiken geerntet und angesichts des tollen Trailers, scheint dies kaum verwunderlich.

Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy’s mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.

Without Trailer

Wenn man den Trailer zu “Without” gesehen hat, kann man sich durchaus wundern, wieso es der Film nicht aufs Sundance geschafft hat, sondern “nur” auf dem Slamdance lief, wo Hauptdarstellerin prompt den Spezialpreis der Jury für ihre Darbietung einheimste.

Without is set on a remote wooded island. Here, a young woman, Joslyn, becomes caretaker to an old man trapped in a wheelchair and in a vegetative state. She has no cell signal, no access to the Internet and is only a year removed from high school. Processing a hefty personal grief, Joslyn vacillates between finding solace in the old man’s company and feeling fear and suspicion towards him. As the days wear on, her isolated routine devolves into a struggle with sexuality, guilt and loss.

Das schöne für Daheimgebliebene am Sundance Film Festival ist ja, dass währenddessen reichlich Trailer zu potentiellen kleinen Filmperlen veröffentlicht werden, die anders womöglich an einem vorbeigehen würden. In diese Kategorie fällt auch “Cold Weather”, der allem Anschein nach einen schrägen Mix aus Detektivgeschichte und Geschwisterdrama bietet.

After abandoning a promising academic career in forensic science, a self-styled Sherlock Holmes, Doug (Cris Lankenau), returns to Portland to live with his more responsible big sister Gail (Trieste Kelly Dunn). He lands a dead-end job working in an ice factory, but soon finds an opportunity to use his passion and skill in detective work when his ex-girlfriend, Rachel (Robyn Rikoon) goes missing. Enlisting a team of ramshackle slacker-sleuths, Doug leads his team down a complex trail of clues and increasingly close to the discovering the mysterious truth about Rachel.

Colin Fitz Lives! Trailer

In einem User-Review auf der IMDb-Page von “Colin Fitz Lives!” wird die Komödie als “The Best Film Never Released” bezeichnet. In der Tat ist der Film keinesfalls neu, sondern feierte seine Premiere bereits vor gut 13 (!) Jahren auf dem 1997er Sundance Film Festival. Ein Verleih lies sich trotz Kritikerlob und Festivalerfolgen jedoch nie finden, und so ist es IFC Films zu verdanken, dass dieser potentielle Kultstreifen via ihrer Video-on-Demand Plattform “Sundance Selects” nun doch noch einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich gemacht wird. Umgehauen hat mich der Trailer zwar nicht, aber William H. Macy und John C. McGinley gemeinsam in einem Film reichen definitiv um mir diesen anzusehen.

A charming, biting, and absurdist comedy inspired by American’s obsession with fame, rock ‘n’ roll and celebrity deaths, Colin Fitz Lives! centers on two eccentric security guards hired to guard the grave of a dead rock legend, the eponymous Colin Fitz. Echoing the canny madness of This Is Spinal Tap! and the deadpan worldview of Clerks, the film explores dead rock star mythology and post-modern romance, making a case for friendship in a world-gone-mad.
